Commodores Lose a Heartbreaker at the Buzzer, 83-82, at Cuyahoga CC

Sophomore guard Josawah Bradford drove the length of the court in the final seven seconds and scored a layup as time expired to hand the Lorain County Community College men's basketball team a heartbreaking 83-82 loss at Tri-C's Metro Campus on Wednesday evening, Feb. 7. Seven seconds earlier, sophomore forward Daniel Lott knocked down a three-point shot to give LCCC an 82-81 lead. Cuyahoga then called a time-out prior to Bradford's game-winning drive and basket.
The game was tied at 66 when LCCC freshman guard Luis Santiago converted two straight shots from long range with 7:05 to play. The score was tied again at 68 when the Challengers -- led by sophomore Quintin Dove's game-high 33 points and game-high nine boards -- opened a 79-74 lead with 42 seconds to play. But sophomore forward Zach Swain (pictured) -- LCCC's high scorer with 18 points -- hit a three from long range with 31 seconds remaining to make it 79-77. After Tri-C's sophomore guard Larenz Thurman converted a pair of free throws (81-77), sophomore guard Mike Rell drove the lane for a lay-up with 24 seconds left (81-79). Then Tri-C was called for a charge with 20 seconds to go. After a Commodores' timeout with 13 seconds on the clock, Lott connected on his clutch three-pointer with seven seconds left (82-81) which looked like it might be the winning basket until Bradford's last second heroics.
LCCC's freshman guard Montez Day scored in double figures with 11 points as did sophomore forward Miles Meredith with 10 points. Sophomore guard Kevin Kelley added eight points and Lott finished with seven points and a team-high four rebounds. Rell and Santiago each scored six points and Santiago collected a team-high three assists. Sophomore guard Jake Schultz totaled a game-high four steals along with four points.
Tri-C had two players join Bradford in double figures. Sophomore Waheem Lowman tallied a dozen and freshman Ahmaad Smalls added 13 points.
The Challengers led at halftime, 49-40.
Cuyahoga CC -- #3 in NJCAA D-II -- improves to 21-1 overall and 9-1 atop the OCCAC. LCCC -- #7 in NJCAA D-III -- is 19-4 and 8-3 in the conference. The Commodores will host Edison State CC this Saturday, Feb., 10, at 3 p.m.
