Commodores Almost Knock Off Conference Leader Edison State

January 11, 2025 — In a thrilling Ohio Community College Athletic Conference matchup Saturday afternoon, the Lorain County Community College women's basketball team gave the league-leading Edison State Community College Chargers all they could handle before ultimately falling short, 90-83.

The Commodores (6-10, 2-4) never led in the contest, but they came close to handing the Chargers their first conference loss numerous times throughout the game.

Edison (12-6, 5-0) jumped out to a 29-17 first-quarter lead, but LCCC refused to let the game slip away. When the Chargers led by 14 halfway through the second quarter, LCCC responded with a 9-0 run over three minutes to cut the deficit to five points. Edison carried a 49-43 lead into halftime.

LCCC went to work in the third quarter to get back into the game. It started with a long two-pointer by Chloe Meng (Elyria, Ohio/First Baptist Christian) and a three-pointer by Abigail Schmitz (Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS). Schmitz was instrumental in keeping the Commodores within striking distance, scoring back-to-back field goals, including a steal and layup at the 4-minute mark to cut the lead to 59-56.

Ohio Community College Athletic Conference Player of the Week, Ally Winnen (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS), brought the Commodores within one point early in the fourth quarter with an and-1 layup. Allison Jones (Homerville, Ohio/Wadsworth HS) scored five points in the fourth quarter to keep LCCC competitive. Haleyna Houston (LaGrange, Ohio/Keystone HS) assisted Jones on a long jumper that put the Commodores within striking distance with six minutes remaining.

However, the Commodores went cold after that, failing to score over the next four minutes as Edison padded their lead to secure their fifth conference victory.

Abigail Schmitz turned in an exceptional offensive performance, scoring a game-high 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting. She also contributed four rebounds and four assists. Winnen was equally impactful, dominating the post with a monster double-double of 26 points and 18 rebounds.
