Bio

Assistant Coach Mitch Gillam brings decades of coaching, leadership, and educational experience to Lorain County Community College.  Gillam, a graduate and two-sport athlete (Basketball & Baseball)  of the United States Merchant Marine Academy earned a degree in Marine Transportation and a minor in business. Gillam later earned his master’s degree in educational leadership and school administration from Ashland University.

Throughout his coaching career, Gillam has built a reputation for developing successful programs and student-athletes.  Many of his high school athletes have gone on to compete at the Division I, Division II, and Division III levels in both basketball and golf.  His experience includes coaching stops at Oberlin College (where he was an assistant on Isaiah Cavaco’s staff), University at Buffalo, Lorain City Schools, Amherst High School, and Fairview High School.

While on Cavaco’s staff at Oberlin College, Gillam helped the Yeomen achieve some significant milestones. These included having the program’s best three-year win total, setting a school record for conference wins and recording the second most wins in school history.

As a head coach at Amherst and Fairview, he led his teams to various championships and team accomplishments.  Gillam also served on the basketball staff for Lorain City Schools in two different stints, helping lead that program to a Final Four, two Elite 8 appearances, and several Sweet 16 appearances. In addition to basketball, he has coached golf at both Amherst High School and Oberlin College, where his teams have won numerous conference and tournament championships.

Gillam is a lifelong resident of Lorain County and a native of Lorain, where he was an All-Ohio point guard for Admiral King High School. He and his wife Beth currently reside in Amherst and Gillam has spent a majority of his career in education with the Amherst School District.
