Commodores Come Up Short Against Oberlin College JV, 6-5

March 6, 2023 - - Lorain County Community College will have to wait until this weekend for another opportunity to pick up their first win of the 2023 campaign after dropping their first three contests of the season. The latest defeat came at the hands of Oberlin's JV squad who managed to sneak away with a 6-5 win in seven innings over the Commodores on Monday evening.

Oberlin scored twice in the second inning off LCCC starter Caleb Shinsky (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) then added another run in the fourth.   LCCC managed to tie it up in the top of the fifth after three batters reached base without a hit.  That's when Mason Shultz (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS) tripled to left to clear the bases and tie the game at three runs apiece.

Oberlin regained the lead in the sixth with three runs off reliever Dan Arth (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood HS).  LCCC responded with a pair of runs of their own in the top of the seventh, loading the bases again but this time failing to get the timely hit to extend the game or take the lead.

Last Saturday, LCCC opened their season with an Ohio Community College Athletic Conference match up against the Hocking College Hawks in Logan, Ohio, which they lost 3-1 in game one and 7-4 in game two.  Cody DeVos (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay HS) pitched a complete game for the Commodores in the first contest, striking out seven batters over six innings.  Rocky Houston (Grafton, Ohio/Keystone HS) started game two and struck out four batters in five innings.

Houston would also go 3-for-7 at the plate over both games with two stolen bases coming in game one. Both Ben DeSimone (Grafton, Ohio/Midview HS) and Jaden Nestor-Fox (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS) homered for the Commodores while Sam Mullenax (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Berea-Midpark HS) would go 2-for-3 with a triple and a run scored.

LCCC will get a chance for some revenge on the diamond this Friday when they host Hocking at Sports Force Park in Sandusky.  The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m.
