Baseball Swept By Cuyahoga Community College In Home Opener

March 25, 2023 - - The Lorain County Community College Commodores scored ten runs against the Cuyahoga Community College Triceratops in game two of their double header at Sports Force Parks in Sandusky, Ohio but it wasn't enough to get their first win of the season as they fell 17-10 after dropping the first game of the doubleheader, 27-4.

Fighting gale force winds that had baseballs flying all over the field, both teams struggled in the elements to keep the game clean of errors.

The Commodores held the lead briefly in game one against the Triceratops, who they held scoreless to start the game thanks to a nifty double play turned by starting pitcher Rocky Houston (Grafton, Ohio/Keystone HS).

Houston was the whole offense for the Commodores in game one.  First, he gave himself the lead in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Jaden Nestor-Fox (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS).  Then, he homered in the third inning to cut the Triceratops lead down to a pair of runs after scoring five in the second inning. And lastly, he scored from third thanks to Austin Isenhart (Elyria, Ohio/Midview HS) who reached base on a fielder's choice.

The Triceratops kept the momentum going in game two scoring 12 runs before the Commodores struck for four runs in the fourth as Mason Shultz (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS) scored off Jonathan St. Peter's (Amherst, Ohio/Marion L. Steele HS) double, Ben DeSimone (Grafton, Ohio/Midview HS) walked with the bases loaded, and then Sam Mullenax (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Berea-Midpark HS) singled home St. Peter and Joey Kulwicki (Grafton, Ohio/Midview HS).

The Commodores scored two more runs in the fourth with Houston scoring on a wild pitch and Shultz scoring on a Kulwicki single. Nestor-Fox scored again in the sixth before the Commodores plated three runs in the seventh to try and extend the game.

Houston started for LCCC and went three innings, striking out two batters in game one.  Caleb Shinsky (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) started game two, going four innings with a pair of strikeouts before getting relieved by Mike Flachbart who pitched three innings and allowed just three hits with a pair of strikeouts.

LCCC will travel to Westmoreland County Community College this Wednesday at 1 p.m. for a doubleheader with the Wolfpack.
