LCCC Esports Picks Up Wins In NJCAAE Week 6 As Postseason Draws Near

March 31, 2024 - - The Lorain County Community College Esports program rolled through week 6 of the NJCAAE spring season with players positioning themselves with one week remaining before the NJCAAE playoffs begin.

Super Smash Brothers – 1v1 – Best-of-7

Six LCCC student athletes came away with wins on Tuesday in 1v1 Super Smash Bros. Ultimate competition as Robert Rogers (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) picked up his fifth win of the spring to improve to 5-1.  William Klein (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) and Colby Cabrera (Amherst, Ohio/Marion L. Steele HS) also won their contender series Tier 2 matches to improve to 4-2 heading into the final week of the regular season.  Jason Thomas (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS), Josh Conde (Lorain, Ohio/LCCC Early College), and David LeBron Jr. (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) picked up wins in the Open Series Tier 3 division.  LeBron Jr. improves to 4-2.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 1v1 – Best-of-7

Rogers easily won his week 6 match in a clean sweep of his opponent from Heart Community College and improves to 4-2.  Collin Zielinski (North Olmsted, Ohio/North Olmsted HS) won his match against Connors State Community College to improve to 2-3.

Valorant – 5v5 – Best-of-3

The Commodore Valorant team won for the third week in a row after defeating Finger Lakes Community College on Thursday in three rounds.  LCCC lost the first round but won round two and three to improve to 4-2 with one week remaining.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Crew Battle – 3v3 – Best-of-3

The Commodores Blue team, comprised of Rogers, Gabriel Beckstrom (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS), and Cabrera won their match 2-0 to improve to 5-1 in the spring.

LCCC's Esports team competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE) which is split into three tiers: Tier 1 - Premier Series, Tier 2 - Contender Series, and Tier 3 - Open Series.  There is a fall season (September-December) and a spring season (February-April).  LCCC has players that compete in Tier 2 and Tier 3.  Tier 2 - Contender Series (CS) competition is the mid-level of NJCAAE competition for members with teams made up of eligible students while Tier 3 - Open Series (OS) competition is the open level of NJCAAE competition for members. In Tier 3, participants do not have to meet any Student Eligibility requirements.

Both tiers of competition run for seven weeks before the postseason begins.

 

Currently, LCCC competes in seven gaming titles/competitions:

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a fighting game, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a racing game, that feature characters from the Nintendo gaming universe on the Nintendo Switch. With Super Smash Bros. players can compete in individual competitions in a best-of-five match or in crew battle, an elimination style game in a 3v3 format.

 

Valorant, a PC first person shooting game where teams of five players compete in a best two-of-three match where the objective is for one team to place and detonate a spike while the other team tries to diffuse it.  LCCC also competes in Overwatch 2, another first person shooting game.

 

Tekken and Street Fighter, both hand-to-hand combat fighting games.
