Rogers Stays Alive In NJCAAE Super Smash Bros. Playoffs

April 18, 2024 – The National Junior College Athletic Association Esports Playoffs continued on Wednesday evening with Robert "Yashi" Rogers (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) competing in the third and fourth rounds of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Tier 2 Tournament.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 1v1 – Best-of-Five

Rogers easily flew through his first match, picking up a 3-0 sweep of his opponent from Finger Lakes Community College.

The next match, round four of the winner's bracket, was against Kirtland Community College.  His opponent, the No. 1 seeded "Springy", had not lost a single round in postseason play up to the showdown with Rogers.

The No. 4 seeded Rogers came out and picked up an unsuspecting win against Springy, who was playing as Sonic, in the first round where he was down one stock.  After Springy picked up the next two rounds convincingly, both fighters found themselves on their last stocks in round four, trading hits and dodging knockout blows by their opponent.

Both players had entered into 100% damage and the next hit would have a good chance at either ending the match or extending it in Rogers' case.  After a solid 20 seconds of low damage hits and maneuvering by both fighters, Springy landed the fatal blow to deal Rogers his first postseason loss.

Rogers moves to the elimination bracket quarterfinals where his next match will be held on April 23, 2024 at 8 p.m.  His opponent has yet to be determined.
