Commodores Roll to 16-2 Record With 88-79 Victory Over D-II Jamestown CC

The Lorain County Community College men's basketball team won its fourth straight game and improved to 16-2 for the season behind a balanced scoring attack and a strong defensive effort to defeat Jamestown (NY) CC, 88-79, on Sunday afternoon, January 21, on the Commodores' court.

LCCC -- the #12 team in NJCAA D-III this week -- led at halftime, 37-34, after opening a 31-22 advantage with 5:28 to play in the first half.  The Commodores stretched the lead to 16 at 72-56 with 6:56 remaining on a three-pointer by freshman shooting guard Thomas Hronis.

Jamestown CC cut the lead in half at 78-70 with 3:40 to play and 83-75 with 2:03 left, but free throws kept the Jayhawks at bay down the stretch.

Sophomore guard Mike Rell (pictured) -- the team's top scorer -- again led the offense with 19 points on 9-of-15 shooting, plus six rebounds, two assists and two steals.   Freshman guard Montez Day scored a dozen points on 4-of-8 shooting with a pair of steals and one assist in 18 minutes.  Sophomore guard Kevin Kelley connected on 5-of-6 shots for 11 points after a team-high 13 a day earlier against Hocking College.  Kelley also provided a game-high six assists plus six boards and a steal.  Sophomore forward Miles Meredith scored 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting plus a team-high seven rebounds and one assist as well as a solid defensive effort.  In all, 13 players scored for the Commodores.

"We gave the kind of effort we needed to today," Head Coach Marty Eggleston stated.  "Miles (Meredith) played quality minutes today; he made his minutes count.  And Kevin Kelley is coming back into his own," Eggleston added.

Sophomore forward Daniel Lott was the fifth Commodore in double figures with 10 points, three boards, an assist and a steal.

Sophomore guard Germaine Wright scored 19 to lead five Jamestown scorers in double figures. The Jayhawks' sophomore forward Terrance Cosby was credited with 20 rebounds as each team grabbed 41 boards.

LCCC shot 46% for the game and 40% from beyond the arc (8-of-20) to JCC's 38% from the field and 28% from long range (7-of-25).

The Commodores -- in the middle of a six-game home stand -- will host OCCAC member Clark State on Wednesday, January 24, at 7:30 p.m.  Jamestown CC -- a D-II team -- is now 6-9 this season.
