Commodores Topple 13th-Ranked Philadelphia CC for 12th Straight Victory

The Lorain County Community College men's basketball team came from 16 points behind -- 14 at the half  -- with a second half surge that stunned Philadelphia CC -- the No. 13 team in DIII -- 81-75, on Tuesday evening, December 19, in Philadelphia, PA.

LCCC trailed at halftime, 46-32, but played perhaps the best half of the season to earn the victory and maintain a perfect 12-0 mark this season. The 16-point deficit (14 at halftime) was the largest of the season to date.

The Commodores were paced by the trio of sophomore forward Mike Rell (pictured), sophomore guard Jake Schultz and freshman center/forward Jovon Jones.

"Those three had great games and led us back from a big deficit on the road in a difficult place to play against a very good team," Head Coach Marty Eggleston stated. "They had no answer for Schultz, Rell and Jones.   JJ (Jones) had multiple dunks and did a great job on the boards."

Rell topped all scorers with a game-high 22 points, including 18 in the critical second half when LCCC outscored Philadelphia, 49-29.  He also notched 6 big assists, 4 rebounds and a steal.  Schultz scored 14 and team-highs of 10 rebounds, 6 huge steals and 3 assists.  Sophomore forward Daniel Lott added 13 points, 3 boards and a steal.  Jones contributed 6 points with big-time dunks, 8 caroms and 1 assist.  Sophomore forward Miles Meredith contributed 9 points, 7 boards, an assist and a steal. The team swiped 13 steals compared to 5 for Philadelphia.

"We were down 16, but once we got the lead in the second half we kept it," Eggleston commented.  "This feeling that we have right now is why we do what we do every day.  I am very proud of this team and happy for them," Eggleston added.

The Commodores will have a break in the schedule until they host DII Wayne County (MI) CC on Saturday, December 30 at 3 p.m.
