August 30, 2023 - - The Lorain County Community College women's volleyball team picked up their first win of the 2023 season over the Lakeland Community College Lakers Wednesday evening with a 3-0 sweep (25-11, 25-17, 25-14).

Whether it was aces, blocks, or kills, the Commodores capitalized on Lakeland errors and cruised to their first Ohio Community College Athletic Conference victory of the season.

The Commodores (1-1, 1-1) got off to a quick start in the first set, going up 5-1 on the Lakers (2-3, 0-1) and building that lead to 18-8 before Lakeland called a timeout. After battling back to tie the second set at 6-6, Maggie Riley (Elyria, Ohio/Midview HS) served up six consecutive services aces to put the Commodores in control, eventually winning the set 25-17.   LCCC battled with Lakeland throughout the third set, trailing 8-7 after a Lakeland ace.

To the rescue was Niyanna Flowers (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) who came up with two block kills coupled with two more aces from Riley and two attack kills from Josie Filice (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood HS) forcing the Lakers to call time out trailing 15-11.

Coming out of the Lakeland timeout, Brianna Vidovich (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) served up another ace for LCCC, Abbey Williams (North Ridgeville, Ohio/First Baptist Christian School) delivered a kill, and Izabel Gallardo-Santo Domingo (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS) served over an ace to force Lakeland into their final timeout trailing 19-13. Gallardo-Santo Domingo finished with 20 digs.

Riley finished with nine total aces and had 29 assists.  Leading the way in kills for the Commodores was Filice with 10, her second double-digit kill total in as many games, while Williams had eight. Clearview Clipper grads Flowers and Nilaysia Todd (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) each had 6 kills.

LCCC will travel to the campus of Owens Community College this weekend to compete in four matches at the Owens Express Invitational where they will compete against Delta College (11:45 am) and St. Clair County Community College (3:15 p.m.) on Friday before they take on Hagerstown Community College (12:30 p.m.) and Kellogg Community College (4 p.m.) on Saturday.
