Commodores Close Out 2023 Regular Season; Region XII Tournament Awaits

October 21, 2023 - - Lorain County Community College's women's volleyball team closed out the 2023 regular season with a 3-0 loss to the Clark State Community College Eagles in Springfield, Ohio on Saturday, October 21, 2023. It was the Commodores' second loss to the Eagles this season, the first coming on September 22 in LCCC home finale.

Josie Filice (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood HS) – 9 kills, .273 hitting

Nilaysia Todd (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) – 6 kills,  .200 hitting, solo block

Kylie Zocchi (Avon, Ohio/Avon HS) – 4 kills, .300 hitting, 11 digs

Abbey Williams (Elyria, Ohio/First Baptist Christian School) – 5 kills

Maggie Riley (Elyria, Ohio/Midview HS) – 4 kills, 24 assists, 5 digs

 

Recap

The Eagles and Commodores battled into overtime in the first set with the Eagles coming out on top 32-30.  LCCC had 14 kills and hit .160 in the first set.

In the second set, the Commodores had the early lead 11-8 when Clark called their first timeout.  The Commodores continued to hold that lead until the Eagles finally broke through and tied the set 17-17.  From there, Clark used a 5-1 run to extend the lead to 22-18 and force an LCCC timeout.  Clark would eventually go on to win the set, 25-20.

Lexa Bunevich got the third set started with an ace and LCCC extended the lead with five more points to go up 6-0.  However the Eagles would climb back to tie the set at 12.  The teams would trade points until the Eagles took command with three straight points until a service error kept the Commodores in the contest.  But it wouldn't be enough as Clark used a 7-2 run to take the set and the match.

 

Notes

  • LCCC hit .121 for the match
  • Kylie Zocchi and Lexa Bunevich had double digit digs for the Commodores
  • Maggie Riley had 24 assists and finished the regular season by having 20+ assists in each match
  • The Commodores finish the regular season 7-10 overall and 6-6 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference
  • The Commodores were without reigning OCCAC Libero of the Year Izabel Gallardo-Santo Domingo

 

Next Up

The postseason is upon us as the Commodores will travel to Delta College for their Region XII Tournament match with NJCAA DIII No. 2 Owens Community College on Tuesday October 24, 2023.  LCCC lost to Owens in five sets on September 8, 2023 and lost in four sets at home on September 20, 2023.  Match begins at 4 p.m.  If the Commodores defeat the Express, they will face the NJCAA DIII No. 3 Delta College Pioneers for the NJCAA Region XII DIII Championship.
