2023 Volleyball Season Ends With Loss To Owens In NJCAA Region XII Tournament

October 26, 2023 - - The Lorain County Community College women's volleyball team's 2023 season came to an end with a three game sweep at the hands of the NJCAA No. 2 ranked Owens Community College Express Tuesday evening during the first round of the NJCAA Region 12 DIII Tournament. 

Owens went on to win the regional title against host Delta College in three sets.

Top Commodores

Nilaysia Todd (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) – 12 kills, .333 hitting, one solo block

Abbey Williams (North Ridgeville, Ohio/First Baptist Christian School) – 8 kills, .160 hitting,

Izabel Gallardo-Santo Domingo (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS) – 26 digs

Maggie Riley (Elyria, Ohio/Midview HS) – 29 assists, six service aces, 5 digs

Recap

The Commodores (7-11, 6-6) and Express (17-9, 12-0) traded points throughout most of the first set until LCCC got their largest lead at 19-16.  They had the Express on the ropes with a 24-21 edge near the end but the Express rallied to score five straight points to take set one, 26-24. The Commodores hit for .214 and had 13 kills.

The Express never trailed in the set second set as they built a 19-13 lead to force LCCC to call a timeout.  From there, LCCC scraped together a rally to cut Owens lead to 19-17, but that would be as close as they would get as Owens won, 25-19, despite the Commodores getting 13 kills and hitting .278, their best hitting percentage of the match.

As with the second set, the Express never trailed as they got out ahead of the Commodores and eventually led 19-11. That lead would balloon to 24-14 but the Commodores showed some fight.  LCCC would score six straight points but eventually fell 25-20.

• Maggie Riley finishes her sophomore season at LCCC getting 20+ assists in every match.
• Riley also recorded a service ace in all but two matches in 2023
• Izabel Gallardo-Santo Domingo recorded 10+ digs in all but one of her matches in 2023
• Kylie Zocchi had her eighth match of 10+ digs of the 2023 season
