Commodores Eliminated From NJCAA Region XII Tournament

May 10, 2023 - - Lorain County Community College lost both of their games in the NJCAA Region XII DIII Tournament Wednesday and were eliminated from postseason contention.  The Commodores battled but lost 5-13 to top-seeded Owens Community College in round one and then lost to Terra State Community College 11-3 in the elimination bracket.

Austin Isenhart (Elyria, Ohio/Midview HS) supplied most of the offense in LCCC's first game by driving in four runs off two doubles while making a number of plays in the field at first base.

Dan Arth (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood HS) got the start for LCCC in the first game and worked a hitless first against the Express.  Arth nearly got out of the second inning when a close play at first base extended the inning for Owens who took advantage by loading the bases and scoring three runs on a double.

A few batters later, they did it a second time to extend their lead 6-2.

However, the Commodores would plate three in the fifth inning thanks to an Isenhart double who later scored on a Ben DeSimone (Grafton, Ohio/Midview HS) single to cut the Owens lead to a run.  Owens would respond with a five run fifth to give them some insurance before sealing the victory with two more runs in the seventh.

Arth finished with 5.1 innings pitched with a strikeout. Julian Martinez (Grafton, Ohio/Midview HS) finished the game with 1.1 innings worked.

LCCC started the elimination game the same way they started against Owens, scoring first when Nick Morgan (Grafton, Ohio/Midview HS) walked with the bases loaded to score Rocky Houston (Grafton, Ohio/Keystone HS). Isenhart scored Mason Shultz (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS) in the fifth with an RBI single and Houston scored again on a wild pitch in the seventh.

Houston came on in relief for starter Cody DeVos (Bay Village, Ohio/Bay HS) who went three innings with three strike outs. Houston punched out two batters in three innings of work.

DeVos finishes his LCCC career with 93 strikeouts in 82 innings with five career complete games.  Houston was limited on the mound this season due to injury but finished with 36 career strikeouts in 44 innings pitched.  At the plate, Houston batted .298 with four home runs, 40 RBI, and 29 career stolen bases.
