Late Inning Push In Game One Falls Short As LCCC Drops Two At Penn State Shenango

March 14, 2024 - - Lorain County Community College baseball suffered two losses to Penn State-Shenango Wednesday afternoon, losing game one, 7-4, and the second game, 11-1, in six innings.

 

Recap

Game 1

The Commodores got down early against the Lions after threatening with two runners in scoring position in the top of the first. PSS scored three runs in the first and then three more in the second inning to give themselves a six-run cushion.  After the Lions added another run in the fifth, Mason Shultz (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS) got the Commodores on the board with a solo home run to right in the top half of the sixth inning.

 

After Ben Zimmerman (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake HS) held Shenango scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, LCCC tried to stage a late comeback by plating three runs in the seventh inning.  Matt Roesel (Lorain, Ohio/Lorain HS) led off the inning with double to right center and then scored on Jaden Nestor-Fox's (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS) single to center.  Nestor-Fox and Hunter Cahl (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS) both scored on passed balls a few batters later but that would be all the Commodores could muster.

 

Game 2

LCCC carried the momentum that they started to build in the first game into the second but it would be short lived. Nestor-Fox led off the game with a double down the right field line and moved to third on Cahl's grounder to short.  He later scored on balk call to put LCCC up 1-0 in the first inning.  The Commodores offense only had two hits in the second game as Shenango closed out the contest in six innings, 11-1.

 

Notes

  • The Commodores fall to 1-3 on the season. 
  • Mason Shultz started game one and went four innings for the Commodores.  He struck out six batters and walked two.  Jordan Streamo (Girard, Ohio/Niles McKinley HS) pitched the fifth while Zimmerman made his pitching debut for LCCC in game one.
  • Dan Arth (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood HS) started game two for LCCC and was relieved by Silas Skvor (Oberlin, Ohio/Firelands HS) in the third.  Caleb Skinsky (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) made his second appearance of the season while Matt Roesel (Lorain, Ohio/Lorain HS) made his LCCC debut on the mound in the sixth inning of game two.
  • Nestor-Fox has hit safely in all four games he has played in this season

 

Next Up

The Commodores will host the Delta College Pioneers this Saturday at Sports Force Parks in Sandusky, Ohio for a doubleheader.  On Sunday, the Commodores will travel to Edison Community College in Piqua, Ohio for their first taste of OCCAC competition.  First pitch for both doubleheaders is at 1 p.m.
