Shultz Homers Again As Commodores Swept By Owens

April 14, 2024 - - After two days of delays thanks to Mother Nature, the Lorain County Community College baseball team fell to Owens Community College in both games of a doubleheader on Sunday at Sports Force Parks in Sandusky, Ohio.  The Express jumped on the Commodores in game one for a ten-spot to propel them to a 19-5 victory in five innings and then won 9-1 in game two despite a fight from the Commodores in the first couple of innings.

Recap

Game one

Mason Shultz (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS) started for the Commodores in game one going just one inning as the Express quickly erupted for 10 runs aided by two home runs and two errors by the Commodore defense.  LCCC got a run in the bottom of the inning thanks to a Hunter Cahl (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS) ground out RBI that scored Jaden Nestor-Fox (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS) who led off the inning with a triple.

Owens continued to pad their lead on reliever ReDon (TJ) Jones III (Mayfield Heights, Ohio/Cornerstone Christian HS) who took over for Shultz in the second inning and finished the game with a strikeout. Shultz recorded two strikeouts in his lone inning of work.

Trailing 19-1, LCCC tried to stave off a mercy rule loss in the bottom of the fifth inning when they scored four runs.  Tyler DeLuciano (Cleveland, Ohio/Holy Cross HS) scored thanks to a Nestor-Fox single.  Cahl singled to center in the next at-bat which set the stage for Shultz to hit his fourth home run of the season and the cut the Express lead to 19-5.

Game two

The Express and Commodores battled over the first couple of innings as Ben Zimmerman (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake HS) took the bump in game two.  The Express got a run off of Zimmerman in the first but he held Owens scoreless over the next two frames until they broke out for seven runs in the fourth inning. Zimmerman finished with two strikeouts in 3.1 innings pitched.

Dan Arth (Lakewood, Ohio/Lakewood HS) came on in relief going 3.2 innings with a strikeout and one run allowed the rest of the way.

LCCC got their only run in the third by Nestor-Fox who doubled to start the inning, stole third, and then sprinted home when the Owens catcher fired a ball passed the third basemen in an attempt to catch the Commodores speedy leadoff man.
