Cabrera and Rogers Advance In NJCAAE Playoffs

November 19, 2024 - - Both Colby Cabrera (Amherst, Ohio/Marion L. Steele HS) and Robert Rogers (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) moved on in the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Fall Playoffs on Tuesday. 

 

Cabrera won both matches he played in the Tier 2 tournament and Rogers is in the elimination bracket finals in Tier 1 competition after going 3-1 on Tuesday.

Cabrera, now 10-0 this season and the No. 1 seed in the Tier 2 tournament, squeaked by in his first round match up against No. 33 Marshalltown Community College.  Cabrera lost the first two rounds, the first two rounds he has lost this fall, but bounced back to win three straight culminating with a final stock battle in the fifth and decisive round.

 

Cabrera easily won his second match of the night against Ocean County Community College in three rounds.  He will face No. 9 Marshalltown Community College on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Rogers, the No. 3 seed in the East 1 Region of the Tier 1 playoffs, defeated Terra State Community College in four rounds but then lost his second round match against No. 2 Lackawanna College, sending him to the elimination bracket.

 

Rogers defeated Northwest Florida State College and Brookdale Community College in 3-0 sweeps to make it to the elimination bracket finals of the regional tournament.  Rogers next match will not be until December 3, 2024 at 6 p.m.

 

Next Up:

The NJCAAE Postseason continues on Thursday with Cabrera's match in the Super Smash Bros. Playoffs, Rogers first crack at the Tier 1 postseason in the Mario Kart Playoffs, and the Tier 1 Valorant team making their Tier 1 postseason debut as well.

 

Rogers is the No. 3 seed in the Mario Kart tournament and is the reigning Mario Kart Tier 2 Spring Champion.  This fall he jumped to the Tier 1 level.

 

The Valorant team, made up of Brody Taylor (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS), Mason Henderson (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS), Tyler Misconish (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville HS), Ethan Stump (Elyria, Ohio/Early College), and Kylie Zeman (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS), are the No. 4 seed in the East 1 Region.  They will face No. 1 seeded Bryant & Stratton College Virginia at 7 p.m.

About CommodoreEsports:

LCCC's Esports team competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE) which is split into three competition tiers: Tier 1 - Premier Series, Tier 2 - Contender Series, and Tier 3 - Open Series.  There is a fall season (September-December) and a spring season (February-April).  LCCC has players that compete in all three tiers, full-time students have a choice to compete in any tier.  Tier 1 - Premier Series (PS) is the top-level of NJCAAE competition for members with teams made up of eligible students, Tier 2 - Contender Series (CS) competition is the mid-level of NJCAAE competition for members with teams made up of eligible students, and Tier 3 - Open Series (OS) competition is the open level of NJCAAE competition for members. In Tier 3, participants do not have to meet any Student Eligibility requirements but must be associated with LCCC.  Both fall and spring seasons of competition run for seven weeks before the postseason begins.

 

Gaming titles that LCCC Esports plays in or has played in the past include:

 

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a fighting game, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a racing game, that feature characters from the Nintendo gaming universe on the Nintendo Switch. With Super Smash Bros. players can compete in individual competitions in a best-of-five match or in crew battle, an elimination style game in a 3v3 format.

 

Valorant, a PC first person shooting game where teams of five players compete in a best two-of-three match where the objective is for one team to place and detonate a spike while the other team tries to diffuse it.  LCCC also competes in Overwatch 2, another first person shooting game and has also competed in Fortnite starting in 2024.

 

Madden, a football simulation game.

 

Tekken and Street Fighter, both hand-to-hand combat fighting games.
