
Call of Duty Picks Up Second Win; Rogers and Cabrera Stay Perfect in Smash Bros.
March 28, 2025 - - Another week of competition in the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE) brought continued success for the Lorain County Community College (LCCC) Esports teams. Highlighting the week, Robert Rogers and Colby Cabrera maintained their undefeated records in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and LCCC secured a victory in Call of Duty: Warzone.
Marvel Rivals – 6v6
LCCC's Marvel Rivals team—consisting of Jacob Brown (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS), Oliver Chambers (Collins, Ohio/Edison HS), Kylie Zeman (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS), James O'Reilly (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville/LCJVS), Mason Henderson (Vermilion, Ohio/Vermilion HS), and Noah Duncan (Walnut Cove, N.C.)—fell to Rose State College in three rounds in Tier 3 play.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 1v1
In Tier 1 action, Robert Rogers (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) extended his dominant streak to 12-0 this spring, securing victories over Terra State Community College and SUNY Rockland Community College. Rogers has yet to drop a single round this season, winning 36 consecutive rounds to set a new LCCC record for most consecutive round victories in a single season.
In Tier 2 play, James O'Reilly (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS) and Colby Cabrera (Amherst, Ohio/Marion L. Steele HS) both claimed 4-0 sweeps. Cabrera remained undefeated at 5-0 after taking down Kirtland Community College, while O'Reilly fell to 3-2 with a loss to Northwest Florida State College, snapping a three-match winning streak.
O'Reilly and Cabrera continued their strong performances in Tier 3, with Cabrera defeating Rose State College and O'Reilly overcoming Marshalltown Community College.
Hearthstone – 1v1
Xander Taylor (Elyria, Ohio/Huron HS) put up a strong fight but fell to Salt Lake Community College 3-2 in Tier 3 play. He now sits at 4-4 on the season.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – 1v1
James O'Reilly had his three week win streak snapped at the hands of Heartland Community College, losing 4-0 and falling to 3-2 in Tier 2 play. He did secure a win however in Tier 3, bringing his record there to 3-2. Meanwhile, Collin Zielinski lost a hard-fought seven-round match against Rose State College in Tier 3 play.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Crew Battle – 3v3
LCCC fielded two teams in Crew Battles this week.
The LCCC 1 team, featuring Jason Thomas (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS), Colby Cabrera (Amherst, Ohio/Marion L. Steele HS), and Yaniel Collazo (Elyria, Ohio/LCCC Early College), suffered losses to Heartland Community College and Lackawanna College.
The LCCC 2 team, composed of Josh Conde (Lorain, Ohio/LCCC Early College), David LeBron Jr. (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS), and Christopher Gonet (Lorain, Ohio/LCCC Early College), fell to Marshalltown Community College in two rounds but bounced back to defeat SUNY Herkimer County Community College in three rounds.
Call of Duty: Warzone – 2v2
LCCC's Call of Duty: Warzone team, made up of Andrew Wies (Elyria, Ohio/Midview HS), Gavin Madina (Avon, Ohio/Avon HS), and Thurman Green (Lorain, Ohio/Pinellas HS), secured a 2-0 victory over Des Moines Area Community College, adding another win to their record in Tier 3 play.

LCCC's Esports team competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE), which is divided into three competition tiers:
Tier 1 – Premier Series (PS): The highest level of NJCAAE competition, featuring teams composed of eligible students.
Tier 2 – Contender Series (CS): The mid-level competition, also for teams of eligible students.
Tier 3 – Open Series (OS): The most accessible level, open to participants who do not have to meet student eligibility requirements but must be associated with LCCC.
The NJCAAE has two seasons: fall (September–December) and spring (February–April). Both seasons last seven weeks before the postseason begins. LCCC has players competing across all three tiers, and full-time students can choose to participate in any tier.
Games LCCC Esports Competes or has competed in:
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – A fighting game featuring characters from the Nintendo universe, played on the Nintendo Switch. Players can compete in 1v1 best-of-five matches or Crew Battle, a 3v3 elimination-style format.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – A racing game featuring Nintendo characters, also played on the Nintendo Switch.
Valorant – A PC first-person shooter where teams of five compete in a best-of-three format. One team attempts to plant and detonate a spike, while the opposing team tries to defuse it.
Overwatch 2 – Another first-person shooter, in which teams compete using unique hero characters.
Fortnite – LCCC began competing in this battle royale game in 2024.
Marvel Rivals – A 6v6 third-person shooter featuring characters from the Marvel Universe, with LCCC set to begin competition in spring 2025.
Madden – A football simulation game.
Tekken & Street Fighter – Both hand-to-hand combat fighting games.
Hearthstone - Building upon the existing lore of the Warcraft series, a turn-based card game between two opponents, using constructed decks of 30 cards along with a selected hero with a unique power.
