
Playoffs Await Rogers In Tier 1 Smash Bros., Cabrera Stays Undefeated, Xander Taylor Cruises In Hearthstone, and Call of Duty Team Wins Again
April 6, 2025 - - It was a busy and eventful week for the Lorain County Community College Esports team as they competed across multiple titles in National Junior College Athletic Association Esports events in Tiers 1, 2, and 3 as the spring season is beginning to wrap up and the playoffs are just around the corner.
Marvel Rivals – 6v6 – Tier 3 – Best-of-five
The week began with a tough battle in Marvel Rivals as the Commodores faced Rose State College in a Tier 3 6v6 matchup. LCCC came up short, falling 3-0 in a best-of-five series.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 1v1 – Tiers 1, 2, 3 – Best-of-Seven
The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate squad had an especially strong showing. In Tier 3, both James O'Reilly (North Ridgeville, Ohio/North Ridgeville HS) and Colby Cabrera (Amherst, Ohio/Marion L. Steele HS) earned 4-0 sweeps over Walters State Community and Rose State College, respectively. In Tier 2, the duo repeated their success with identical 4-0 wins against Northwest Florida State College.
In Tier 1 action, Robert Rogers (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS)) split his matches—falling 3-1 to Brookdale Community College before rebounding with a 3-1 win over Daytona State College. Rogers capped his regular season with an impressive 14-1 match record and a 43-4 round record, earning the No. 2 seed in the Tier 1 Super Regional postseason beginning Tuesday against Kishwaukee College.
Hearthstone – 1v1 – Tier 3 – Best-of-Five
In Hearthstone, Xander Taylor (Elyria, Ohio/Huron HS) swept both of his matches, defeating East Georgia State College and Salt Lake Community College 3-0 in Tier 3 1v1 best-of-five matches.
Mario Kart – Tiers 2 and 3 – 1v1 – Best-of-Seven
O'Reilly returned to action in Mario Kart, but suffered a pair of defeats. In Tier 3, he dropped a 4-1 match to Danville Area Community College and in Tier 2, he fell 4-0 to Glen Oaks Community College.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Crew Battle – Tier 3 - 3v3 – Best-of-three
The Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Crew Battles saw mixed results in Tier 3 play on Friday. LCCC 1--Cabrera, O'Reilly, and Jason Thomas (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS)--narrowly lost 2-1 to Lackawanna College. LCCC 2--Christopher Gonet (Lorain, Ohio/LCCC Early College), Josh Conde (Lorain, Ohio/LCCC Early College), and David LeBron Jr. (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS)--bounced back strong with a 2-0 sweep over Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
Call of Duty: Warzone – 2v2 – Tier 3 – Best-of-Three
In Call of Duty: Warzone Tier 3 2v2 action, LCCC--Gwen King (Elyria, Ohio/Oberlin HS) and Gavin Medina (Avon, Ohio/Avon HS) ended the week on a high note, sweeping Des Moines Area Community College 2-0.

LCCC's Esports team competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE), which is divided into three competition tiers:
Tier 1 – Premier Series (PS): The highest level of NJCAAE competition, featuring teams composed of eligible students.
Tier 2 – Contender Series (CS): The mid-level competition, also for teams of eligible students.
Tier 3 – Open Series (OS): The most accessible level, open to participants who do not have to meet student eligibility requirements but must be associated with LCCC.
The NJCAAE has two seasons: fall (September–December) and spring (February–April). Both seasons last seven weeks before the postseason begins. LCCC has players competing across all three tiers, and full-time students can choose to participate in any tier.
Games LCCC Esports Competes or has competed in:
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – A fighting game featuring characters from the Nintendo universe, played on the Nintendo Switch. Players can compete in 1v1 best-of-five matches or Crew Battle, a 3v3 elimination-style format.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – A racing game featuring Nintendo characters, also played on the Nintendo Switch.
Valorant – A PC first-person shooter where teams of five compete in a best-of-three format. One team attempts to plant and detonate a spike, while the opposing team tries to defuse it.
Overwatch 2 – Another first-person shooter, in which teams compete using unique hero characters.
Fortnite – LCCC began competing in this battle royale game in 2024.
Marvel Rivals – A 6v6 third-person shooter featuring characters from the Marvel Universe, with LCCC set to begin competition in spring 2025.
Madden – A football simulation game.
Tekken & Street Fighter – Both hand-to-hand combat fighting games.
Hearthstone - Building upon the existing lore of the Warcraft series, a turn-based card game between two opponents, using constructed decks of 30 cards along with a selected hero with a unique power.
Call of Duty: Warzone - Battle royale style first-person shooter game
