January 21, 2023 - - The Lorain County Community College men's basketball team went toe-to-toe with Edison State Community College but ultimately lost 91-86.
A flurry of last minute three point attempts by the Commodores to tie the game in regulation couldn't fall and LCCC suffered their second loss to Edison State this season. The first contest in Piqua, Ohio on December 3, 2022 went into overtime where Edison held off the Commodores 107-100.
Leading the Commodores in scoring was Jayden Roberts (Wellington, Ohio/Wellington HS) with 29 points going 11-for-17 from the field and 7-for-8 from the line. He also led the team in rebounds with eight. It was his 13th game this season scoring 10 points or more and the fifth time this season he has scored 20 or more.
LCCC leaned heavily on the freshmen down the stretch as Roberts scored 10 of LCCC's last 14 points, including the final six scored for blue and gold.
Also scoring in the 20s for the Commodores was Lem Payne (Philadelphia, Pa./Mount Pleasant HS) with 22 points. Payne also had six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Casey Kelley (Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS) and Austin Copen (Amherst, Ohio/Fielands HS) each had 10 points with Kelley having a game-high eight assists.
LCCC took a 45-44 lead into halftime but afterwards Edison State controlled the tempo and built a 14-point lead that the Commodores managed to erase in just over four minutes after Payne hit two free throws with five and half left to play.
LCCC will take on Bryant and Stratton College this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. inside the Ewing Activities Center Gymnasium.
