March 19, 2025 - - The Lorain County Community College softball team opened the 2025 season with two wins against Terra State Community College at Sports Force Park in Sandusky, Ohio. LCCC won the first game 15-10, backed by Alexis Sheridan's three home-run, complete-game pitching performance, and cruised to a sweep of the Titans in game two with 21-run explosion.
Game 1:
The Commodores wasted no time putting runs on the board as Tara Davidson (New London, Ohio/New London HS) led off the game with a double before Alexis Sheridan (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake HS) crushed a home run to give LCCC an early 2-0 lead. The offense continued in the first when Katie Vormelker (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls HS) doubled and later scored on a Helayna Houston (LaGrange, Ohio/Keystone HS) RBI single. Terra State responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, keeping the game close at 3-2.
Sheridan struck again in the second, launching a three-run homer to extend LCCC's lead to 5-2. She also made an impact defensively, capping off the bottom of the second with a diving catch to keep the Titans off the scoreboard.
Houston's aggressive base running in the third inning added another run for the Commodores, scoring on a double steal. However, Terra State answered with two runs in the bottom half, cutting the lead to 6-4.
LCCC's offense kept rolling in the fourth as Vormelker drove home Sheridan to make it 8-4. Sheridan then showed her poise on the mound, working out of a two-on, no-out jam with a clutch strikeout and two groundouts.
Terra State continued to challenge in the fifth inning, but the Commodores' defense held strong. Houston made a running catch and doubled off a Titan runner at first, ending another scoring threat.
The LCCC bats exploded in the sixth with a five-run rally. Davidson led off with a triple and scored on an Amanda DeWitt (South Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS) single. Kaylynn Hannan (Sheffield Village, Ohio/Brookside HS) then delivered a key double, driving in both DeWitt and Sheridan. Vormelker followed with an RBI single, and an errant throw by Terra State allowed her to score from second.
Sheridan, who pitched a complete game for the Commodores, capped off her dominant performance with her third home run of the game in the seventh, putting the Commodores ahead 15-9 and sealing the victory.
Game 2:
The Commodores' offense continued to shine in Game 2, putting up 21 runs on 18 hits in a dominant 21-11 victory, starting the season 2-0. Five Commodores recorded multi-hit games in the second half of the doubleheader.
Sheridan drove in DeWitt after she tripled for LCCC's first hit of the game. Sheridan later scored when Houston grounded into a fielder's choice. Mikayla Collins (Sheffield Village, Ohio/Brookside HS) capped off the inning with a single that brought home Hannan and Houston, giving LCCC an early 4-0 lead.
Terra responded with three runs in the bottom of the first to stay within reach, but the Commodores quickly pulled away. LCCC exploded for 10 runs in the top of the second inning, punctuated by DeWitt's grand slam that put the game out of reach.
In the third inning, Natali Trent (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) drove in Vormelker before LCCC erupted again with a five-run fourth inning. DeWitt and Sheridan both reached base to start the frame, and Hannan drove in DeWitt, followed by Vormelker bringing home Sheridan. Collins then doubled to score Vormelker and Houston before crossing the plate herself on a shortstop error.
Vormelker added LCCC's final run in the fifth, driving in Sheridan to cap off the offensive outburst.
Larissa Sullivan (Medina, Ohio/Lutheran West HS) and Collins combined to pitch the second game, limiting Terra State to just five hits.
