Winnen’s Big Fourth Quarter Propels Commodores To Victory over Lakeland

December 7, 2024 - - Lorain County Community College women's basketball picked up their fourth win of the season Saturday afternoon against Lakeland Community College, 75-66.

The win was their first in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play this season after dropping their first two chances in an overtime loss to Cuyahoga Community College and Terra State Community College this past Wednesday.

Ally Winnen (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) scored a game-high 34 points (12 in the fourth quarter) for the Commodores and pulled down 16 rebounds.  Forward Michelle Echevarria (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Lehigh HS) scored 14 and had 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season.  For Winnen, it was her sixth double-double of the season.

LCCC controlled the game on the glass by outrebounding Lakeland, 52-33.

The Commodores (4-6, 1-2) led by eight at the halfway point but the Lakers (2-5, 0-2) came out of the break outscoring LCCC 24-12 in the third to take a 54-50 lead heading into the final quarter.

Trailing 62-59 in the fourth with just under five minutes to play, Lakeland was hit with a technical foul and common foul on the same play which put Echevarria to the line for four free throws.  She drilled all of them to give LCCC the lead for good as they held Lakeland scoreless for a crucial three minute stretch in the final minutes of the fourth.

Lakeland cut the lead to four in the final two minutes but free throws from Helayna Houston (LaGrange, Ohio/Keystone HS) and Abigail Schmitz (Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS) iced the game for the Commodores.
