Abigail Schmitz Named OCCAC Player of the Week (Jan. 20-26)

January 28, 2025 - - Lorain County Community College women's basketball forward Abigail Schmitz (Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS) has been named the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) Player of the Week for her performances during the week of January 20–26. 

 

Across the two games, Schmitz averaged 24.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists, and 2.5 steals per game while demonstrating composure in high-pressure situations. 

 

Schmitz began her week with a standout performance, scoring 27 points in a home matchup against Terra State Community College on January 22. In the 87–79 victory, she shot 8-for-9 from the free-throw line and added three 3-pointers to her tally. In the third quarter, Schmitz exploded for 13 points, including a nine-point burst during a two-minute stretch that turned the tide in LCCC's favor. Beyond her scoring, she pulled down 12 rebounds and contributed three assists and four steals. 

 

On January 25, Schmitz played a key role in the Commodores' dramatic 70–68 road victory over Clark State College. She scored 22 points while shooting 9-of-22 from the field (40.9%). Schmitz also grabbed five rebounds and dished out two assists, including a decisive one that set up teammate Chloe Meng's game-winning 3-pointer in the closing moments against the Eagles. 

 

 

This marks the first OCCAC Player of the Week honor for Schmitz this season. She is currently second in the OCCAC in field goals made, total points, points per game, and points per 40 minutes. 

 

Nationally, in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division III, Schmitz ranks seventh in total points, eighth in total field goals made, and ninth in total free throws made.
