Big Conference Win Not Enough for Home Court Advantage for Regional Championship
October 15, 2016 - - The Lady Commodores of LCCC knocked off conference foe Cincinnati State in 4 sets winning 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-11 but no game was bigger this season than the earlier match against Columbus State; winner would host the NJCAA Region XII Championship on October 28th. For LCCC, things didn't go their way as Columbus State won 3-0 (25-21, 25-12, 25-16). At the end of the weekend, LCCC has a season record of 15-13 and 4-8 in conference.
Prior to playing Columbus State this weekend, LCCC loss in 5 sets back on the 24th of September and trailed the Lady Cougars in the OCCAC standings. The Lady Commodores had a couple ways they could have received the home bid but what they couldn't afford was losing in 3.
For the shorthanded Commodores team (missing assist leader Shannon Reaser), they fought hard all first set making nothing easy for the Lady Cougars of Columbus State. Playing big roles early was Kara Keim and Ali Stanziano who helped keep their team in the game. On the day, Keim had 9 kills and 4 digs while Stanziano did her best to fill the role of Reaser by having 30 assist and 10 digs. For LCCC the problem was at the net as they lost the kill battle 34 to 21 and lost the block battle 24 to 3. With set 1 going to the wire, the final two sets didn't follow suit as the Lady Cougars won 25-12 and 25-16.
Along with losing in kills and blocks, LCCC had 24 errors to Columbus's 8. Even with the stat lines not in favor of the Lady Commodores, Coach Whitsel of LCCC seemed confident his team will end their season on a high note. "We played better today but still short-handed. We look forward to getting a chance to advance. We plan to work hard towards our goals."
After falling to Columbus State earlier, the Lady Commodores came out strong to beat conference foe Cincinnati State 3-1. Keim who played well earlier in the day followed things up in match two having 16 kills and 5 digs. Nothing was bigger than Maryssa Kellick's play as she chipped in 15 kills, 8 digs and 10 total blocks.
Along with Keim and Kellick, Kelli Warren had 11 kills, and 19 digs while Stanziano had 40 assist with 19 digs and 3 blocks. Unlike match 1, LCCC won the kill battle with 54, assist with 49, digs 88 and blocks 17.
With only two remaining regular season games, LCCC will try to upset Cuyahoga CC on the 19th then Owens CC on the 26th; the 26th will be the team's final home game and a night to recognize the two year players.
