Lady Commodores Extend Their Winning Streak
October 10, 2016 - - The Lady Commodores of Lorain County Community College notched another conference win and extended their winning streak to three after defeating the Lady Lakers of Lakeland CC (7-11, 1-8). In a dramatic match, LCCC pulled out the win in 5 sets, winning 25-23, 25-18, 21-25, 22-25, 15-9. With this, LCCC goes to 14-9 and 3-4 in conference play.
The goal for the Lady Commodores was to come out strong after a long weekend in Grand Rapids, where they went 2-2; they did just that knocking of DII Lakeland CC.
"We played solid the first two sets. We came out and took care of business playing at a high level" said Coach Whitsel following the teams win.
In set 1 the Lady Commodores came out the gates fast, making everything difficult for the Lady Lakers. Maryssa Kellick continued her strong play by leading the night in kills with 27 and 10 kill blocks. "Maryssa played extremely well tonight and is slowly back to being 100% after a shoulder injury. Her strong play was vital." Coach Whitsel. With set 1 close to the very end, the Lady Commodores came together to close out the Lady Lakers and won the set 25-23.
Similar to set 1, LCCC took control of game 2 early but this time around they didn't let Lakeland go on long runs to close the gap. Lindsay Eisbrenner gave her team multiple second chances throughout the night putting her body on the line getting dig after dig; Eisbrenner lead the night in digs with 27. With great team effort, LCCC took the set 25-18 and was on the verge of sweeping Lakeland. Things changed in sets 3 and 4 as the energy died down with the effort level. Coach Whitsel was clearly not happy with the turn of events. "Set 3 and set 4 were huge setbacks for us. We had tons of unforced errors that became very costly. Along with that, we lost our energy during these sets but luckily we got it back late."
The Lady Commodores would drop the 3rd set 21-25 and the 4th 22-25 to the Lady Lakers which forced a final 5th set. Finding their groove again, LCCC took the early lead in the set and never looked back. Stepping up as leader late, Shannon Reaser once again led her team in assist with 53 and saw her Lady Commodores pull out the late win; final score of set 5 was 15-9.
