
LCCC Esports Wraps Up Week 1 of NJCAAE Fall Season
October 5, 2024 - - The Lorain County Community College Esports team was back at it Friday evening to conclude the first week of the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports fall season.
On Friday, it was back to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate but this time the team competition of Crew Battle and the Commodores competed in Rocket League for the first time.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate Crew Battle
LCCC had two teams compete in Crew Battle on Friday night in the Tier 3 – Open Series division. Crew Battle is a team format competition in Super Smash Bros. where three players from each team are eliminated via single matches until all players from one team are eliminated. Teams play best two-of-three and must pick a different order of players in the three rounds.
The Blue team, consisted of Gabriel Beckstrom (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS), Robert Rogers (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS), and Colby Cabrera (Amherst, Ohio/Marion L. Steele HS), cruised to their first win of the season against Herkimer Community College's Green team.
The Gold team, made up of David LeBron Jr. (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS), Ethan Stump (Elyria, Ohio/LCCC Early College), Nehemiah Hopkins (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS), Yaniel Collazo (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS), won their week one match up against Herkimer's Gold team.
Rocket League
For the first time in program history, members of the Commodore Esports team competed in Rocket League, a soccer-style game were players drive vehicles around attempting to bump a large ball into a goal.
Making their Rocket League debut for LCCC on Friday was Christopher Gonet (Lorain, Ohio/LCCC Early College), Wyatt Maldrum (Elyria, Ohio/LCCC Early College), Gilbert Chambers (Collins, Ohio/Edison HS), and Jonathan Zanath (Sheffield Village, Ohio/Brookside HS).
In the best-of-seven match against Marshalltown Community College, they won the first game 4-1 with Chambers scoring three goals but lost the next three games to come up short in the match.
