
Cabrera, Rogers, and Crew Battle Squads Eliminated In Super Smash Bros. Postseason Tournaments
December 5, 2024 - - The Lorain County Community College esports team had two players eliminated on Tuesday evening in the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports Playoffs.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate – 1v1 – Best-of-Five
No. 1 seed Colby Cabrera (Amherst, Ohio/Marion L. Steele HS) lost to Hinds Community College in four rounds in the Tier 2 Contender Series elimination round. Cabrera finishes the season with a 9-2 overall record.
Robert Rogers (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) faced two players from the same college on Tuesday. First up was Trey Torres from Lackawanna College who defeated Rogers on Nov. 19 to send him into the elimination bracket. Facing elimination, Rogers rolled with two 3-0 sweeps against Northwest Florida State College and Brookdale Community College before he got a rematch against Torres in the elimination bracket finals.
Rogers defeated Torres in five rounds to earn a spot in the regional grand finals against No. 1 seed Bikrom Chanda from Lackawanna College.
Rogers extended the match to four rounds but ultimately lost to Chanda which ended his fall season.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate: Crew Battle – 1v1 – Best-of-Three
Earlier in the week on Sunday, two Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Crew Battle squads competed in the Tier 3 – Open Series tournament.
One team, consisting of David LeBron Jr. (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS), Josh Conde (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS), Christopher Gonet (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS), Jason Thomas (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS), and Yaniel Collazo (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria HS), lost their opening round match up against Heartland Community College.
Heartland then faced LCCC's other Crew Battle squad, made up of Gabriel Beckstrom (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS), Robert Rogers (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS), and Colby Cabrera (Amherst, Ohio/Marion L. Steele HS), and defeated them as well in their opening round.

LCCC's Esports team competes in the National Junior College Athletic Association Esports (NJCAAE) which is split into three competition tiers: Tier 1 - Premier Series, Tier 2 - Contender Series, and Tier 3 - Open Series. There is a fall season (September-December) and a spring season (February-April). LCCC has players that compete in all three tiers, full-time students have a choice to compete in any tier. Tier 1 - Premier Series (PS) is the top-level of NJCAAE competition for members with teams made up of eligible students, Tier 2 - Contender Series (CS) competition is the mid-level of NJCAAE competition for members with teams made up of eligible students, and Tier 3 - Open Series (OS) competition is the open level of NJCAAE competition for members. In Tier 3, participants do not have to meet any Student Eligibility requirements but must be associated with LCCC. Both fall and spring seasons of competition run for seven weeks before the postseason begins.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, a fighting game, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, a racing game, that feature characters from the Nintendo gaming universe on the Nintendo Switch. With Super Smash Bros. players can compete in individual competitions in a best-of-five match or in crew battle, an elimination style game in a 3v3 format.
Valorant, a PC first person shooting game where teams of five players compete in a best two-of-three match where the objective is for one team to place and detonate a spike while the other team tries to diffuse it. LCCC also competes in Overwatch 2, another first person shooting game and has also competed in Fortnite starting in 2024.
Madden, a football simulation game.
Tekken and Street Fighter, both hand-to-hand combat fighting games.
