Jayden Roberts' Double-Double Gets Him POW Honors From OCCAC
January 9, 2023 - - For the second week in a row, the Commodores have the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference's top basketball player. Jayden Roberts (Wellington, Ohio/Wellington HS) received the first Player of the Week honor of his collegiate career on Monday after teammate Quante May received the award last week.
Roberts helped guide the Commodores to a win against the Community College of Allegheny County, 75-60. It was the second victory against the Wildcats this season, the first coming in the season opener on Nov. 5, 2022 in the Commodore Classic, 72-59. The freshman shot 11-for-13 from the field on his way to 27 points with a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. He also pulled down 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the 2022-23 season.
The new year has been kind to Roberts. He's averaged 22.5 points and eight rebounds in the first two games of 2023. He's also has flexed some muscle in the paint this year by averaging 6.7 rebounds per game which is good enough for sixth overall in the OCCAC. He's also found his stroke from mid-range, nearly tripling his makes from the field and hitting at a 63% clip in January.
At times, the newcomer has been asked to take on the offensive load for the Commodores as Saturday's contest against Allegheny was the third time in the last seven contests where the 6'5 forward has scored 20 or more points for LCCC.
The Commodores travel to Lakeland Community College this Wednesday to resume OCCAC play as they search for their first win in conference play. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
