Edison Hits Late Three To Force OT; Commodores Fall to Chargers, 107-100
December 3, 2022 - - The Lorain County Community College men's basketball team dropped a tough overtime conference match up at Edison State Community College Saturday afternoon, 107-100.
The Commodores (4-3, 0-2 OCCAC) played a solid opening 20 minutes. They shot 67% from the field, had only a few turnovers, and got scoring from six different players.
Brandon Fisher (Strongsville, Ohio/Columbia HS) hit four 3-point baskets as LCCC went into the break leading by 15, 49-34. Fisher would go on to be the leading scorer for the Commodores, finishing with 34 points on 11-of-19 shooting and going 7-for-10 at the free throw line. The freshman also had seven rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one block. Lem Payne (Philadelphia, Pa/Mount Pleasant HS) and Jason Becka (Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick HS) each had eight first half points.
Despite the brilliant first half the Commodores put together, it didn't last as the Chargers (5-3, 1-0) tied things up at 57 with 12:45 remaining. Both teams would trade baskets until Edison State went up by four with just over a minute left.
On the Commodores' next possession, Becka fed Casey Kelley (Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS) who buried a long range jumper to pull the Commodores to within one. Then after an Edison turnover, Becka fed Quante May (Cleveland, Ohio/Horizon Science Academy) for another 3-pointer with less than a minute remaining giving LCCC a two point lead, 89-87. He would have a team-high five assists.
May finished with 19 points, 14 coming in the second half off 6-of-7 shooting. He also pulled down nine rebounds, had three assists, two steals, and a block. Becka and Jayden Roberts (Wellington, Ohio/Wellington HS) both finished with 13 points with Roberts grabbing seven boards and going 6-for-7 from the field.
After Edison State buried a late three to force overtime, they carried that momentum over and held the Commodores scoreless in the final two minutes of extra time. Edison pulled away and earned their first Ohio Community College Athletic Conference victory.
The Commodores will travel to Cuyahoga Community College this Wednesday when they face the Triceratops at 7:30 p.m.
