Softball Splits Doubleheader With Hocking College In Home Opener At Pipe Yard

March 23, 2025 - - The Lorain County Community College softball team escaped game one with a slim 12-11 victory over the Hocking College Hawks before falling in the second game, 25-15. LCCC erased an 11-run deficit in game two, but a nine-run inning by the Hawks eliminated any chance at a sweep.

Game 1:

LCCC (3-1, 3-1) found itself down 4-0 heading into the bottom of the second inning when its offense came alive. Amanda DeWitt (South Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS), Alexis Sheridan (Avon Lake, Ohio/Avon Lake HS), and Natali Trent (Lorain, Ohio/Clearview HS) each doubled home runs in a seven-run inning for the Commodores.

Sheridan drove in another run in the fourth, tripling to score DeWitt, who had doubled in the previous at-bat and advanced to third on a passed ball.

DeWitt added to the Commodores' lead in the sixth when she drove home Mikayla Collins (Sheffield Village, Ohio/Brookside HS) with her fourth hit of the game. Kaylynn Hannan (Sheffield Village, Ohio/Brookside HS) led off the seventh with a home run, and Katie Vormelker (Olmsted Township/Olmsted Falls HS) later scored on a sacrifice fly by Collins.

Sheridan pitched her second complete game in five days for the Commodores, striking out 11 batters to pick up her second win of the 2025 season.

Game 2:

LCCC faced another deficit after spotting Hocking 11 runs over the first two innings.

The Commodores batted around the lineup in the bottom of the second, scoring six runs to cut the Hawks' lead in half. They added seven more runs in the fifth, culminating in Helayna Houston's (LaGrange, Ohio/Keystone HS) three-run triple to take a 14-13 lead.

However, that would be the last lead LCCC held in game two, as Hocking went on to plate 12 runs over the sixth and seventh innings, securing the win and putting the game out of reach.

Next Up:

The Commodores will travel to Owens Community College for a doubleheader on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, starting at 3 p.m. in Perrysburg, Ohio.
