November 16, 2024 - - The Lorain County Community College women's basketball lost to Cuyahoga Community College in overtime on Saturday, 63-56.
Abbey Schmitz (Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS) led the Commodores in scoring with 14 points with 10 rebounds and three steals while sophomore Ally Winnen (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) scored 11.
Both teams played tight during the first half with neither able to string together a run until the Commodores erupted for a 10-0 scoring streak that was capped by Winnen's fast break basket with 2:46 left in the second quarter and put LCCC up 9. LCCC took a 30-24 lead into the half.
Cuyahoga (1-4, 1-0) started to find their groove in the third quarter as they outscored LCCC 17-9 and took a 2-point lead into the final quarter.
With things tied up at 43 in the fourth, Winnen committed her fifth foul with just under seven minutes to play. That's when LCCC turned to Schmitz to keep them in the game.
With LCCC trailing 54-49, Schmitz drove to basket to score while being fouled. She missed the free throw but LCCC got the offensive rebound when Tri-C couldn't corral the miss. Chloe Meng got fouled on a long two point attempt and split her pair of free throws to pull the Commodores within two points.
With 19 second left, Schmitz drove into the lane for a basket to tie the game. Tri-C couldn't convert their attempt on the next possession to avoid overtime.
In the extra period, LCCC was only able to score two points as the Triceratops prevailed, 63-56, to pick up their first win of the season.
