January 8, 2025 - - The Lorain County Community College women's basketball team claimed a 75-65 victory over Lakeland Community College on January 8, 2025, in Kirtland, Ohio. It was their second victory over the Lakers this season and their first road win, improving their record to 6-9 overall and 2-4 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.
The first quarter saw both teams evenly matched, ending in a 17-17 deadlock. LCCC struggled with their shooting early, going just 8-for-21 from the field in the first ten minutes, but they maintained control through effective ball movement. The Commodores combined for 10 assists in the first half and capitalized on their limited turnovers, giving up just three over the first 20 minutes.
In the second quarter, LCCC seized control by outscoring Lakeland 23-16, pushing their lead to 40-33 at halftime. Despite shooting struggles from the field, hitting only 6-of-28 three-pointers in the game, LCCC's defense and disciplined offense kept them ahead.
The Lakers fought back in the third quarter, trimming the lead to just two points. However, LCCC responded quickly, with Abigail Schmitz (Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS) helping to push the advantage back to nine points. Schmitz made four consecutive free throws during a crucial stretch, leading the Commodores into the fourth quarter with a 56-49 lead.
In the final period, LCCC continued to execute effectively, outscoring Lakeland 19-16 to secure the win.
