Commodores Defeat Kent State Tuscarawas for Third Win In Last Five Games

January 19, 2025 - - The Lorain County Community College women's basketball team secured an 84-50 win over Kent State-Tuscarawas on Saturday afternoon at the Ewing Activities Center Gymnasium. The Commodores delivered a balanced and efficient performance on both ends of the court, improving to 7-11 on the season and 6-5 at home.

It was their second win against Kent State-Tuscarawas this season, the first coming on November 2, 2024, in the Commodore Classic.

The Commodores set the tone early, shooting 47% (9-of-19) in the first quarter. They connected on three of their first four three-point attempts and surged ahead with a fast-break layup by Ally Winnen (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS), assisted by Michelle Echevarria (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Lehigh HS), forcing a Kent State timeout. LCCC led 22-13 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Commodores expanded their lead to double digits with two free throws by Sidney Iler (LaGrange, Ohio/First Baptist Christian), followed by a three-pointer that pushed the margin to 13. Behind Winnen's dominance in the paint—making seven of her first 10 shots and grabbing 11 rebounds in the first half—LCCC took a commanding 41-27 lead into halftime.

The second half followed a similar script as the Commodores pulled away. They built a 20-point lead with two minutes left in the third quarter and cruised in the fourth, outscoring the Golden Eagles 23-10 to seal the victory.

Winnen was a force inside, finishing with a double-double of 28 points (14-of-19 FG) and 19 rebounds (8 offensive). She also contributed 6 assists and 3 steals.

Iler's sharpshooting was pivotal, as she tallied 19 points—a season high—including five three-pointers on 50% shooting from beyond the arc. Chloe Meng (Elyria, Ohio/First Baptist Christian) added 15 points, 4 assists, and 3 three-pointers.

Abigail Schmitz (Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS) scored in double figures as well, contributing 13 points and four rebounds.

Echevarria turned in an all-around solid game with 13 rebounds (10 defensive), 7 points, and a team-high 7 assists.

LCCC's defensive effort also shone, holding Kent State-Tuscarawas to 28.8% shooting from the field and forcing 10 turnovers. The Commodores' dominance on the glass (55-42 rebound advantage) and in transition proved to be the difference as they notched a decisive victory.
