Schmitz and Winnen Lead the Commodores To Victory Over Terra State

January 22, 2025 - -  The Lorain County Community College women's basketball team picked up their eighth win of the season on Wednesday against the Terra State Community College Titans inside the Ewing Activities Center Gymnasium, 87-79.

LCCC earned a bit of revenge against the Titans, who had defeated them on December 4, 2024, by a score of 68-44.

Leading the way for the Commodores this time around were Ally Winnen (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) and Abigail Schmitz (Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS). Winnen, who did not play against Terra State in December, recorded her fifth 20-20 game of the season with 28 points and 21 rebounds (13 offensive).

Her partner-in-crime, Schmitz, added 27 points and 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Schmitz also contributed defensively with four steals, while Winnen secured two blocks to help the Commodores hold off the Titans, who mounted a comeback attempt in the fourth quarter.

Also scoring in double figures was Sidney Iler (LaGrange, Ohio/First Baptist Christian) with 12 points, all coming from beyond the arc.

Michelle Echevarria (Ponce, Puerto Rico/Lehigh HS) had another well-rounded performance, tallying five rebounds, five assists, five steals, and four points.

The Commodores went into the second half trailing by three points but quickly turned the game around by outscoring the Titans 30-17 in the third quarter. Iler set the tone with a three-pointer on an assist from Schmitz to tie the game in the opening seconds.

Schmitz exploded for 13 points in the third quarter, including nine points during a two-minute stretch that put LCCC up by six. She capped the quarter with a three-pointer in the final minute to extend the lead to seven. Schmitz and Winnen then sank four free throws to give the Commodores a double-digit lead heading into the final quarter.

LCCC extended their lead to 13 in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter to secure their third conference win and improve to 8-11 on the season.
