Winnen Breaks Single-Season Scoring Mark As Commodores Fall To Clark State College

February 8, 2025 - - Lorain County Community College's women's basketball squad struggled to find a rhythm early and could not overcome a dominant first quarter from Clark State College, falling 83-67 in their matchup at the Ewing Activities Center Gymnasium on Saturday.

Clark State (7-13, 2-7) jumped out to a commanding 30-14 lead after the first quarter, capitalizing on LCCC's early struggles. The Commodores (9-15, 4-7) committed 10 first-half turnovers to the Eagles' two, leading to easy transition points for the visitors, who finished with 20 points off Commodore miscues.

Despite the loss, sophomore forward Ally Winnen (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) delivered another historic performance. She dominated the paint with 32 points and a staggering 23 rebounds, marking her seventh 20-20 game of the season. Early in the fourth quarter, Winnen surpassed Angel Blakely's single-season scoring record, netting her 508th point of the 2024-25 campaign. This milestone came just days after she set the Commodores' single-season rebounding record with her 344th board, surpassing Vanecia Billings' previous record of 343, against Bryant & Stratton College.

Abigail Schmitz (Amherst, Ohio/Firelands HS) added 19 points while shooting 3-of-9 from beyond the arc, and Allison Jones chipped in five points. However, LCCC's struggles from deep (4-of-26, 15.4%) and turnovers (17 total) prevented them from mounting a comeback.

LCCC showed resilience in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 15 midway through the period, but Clark State responded to keep the Commodores at bay.

In their previous meeting on Jan. 25, 2025, LCCC secured a thrilling two-point win on the road thanks to a last-second three-pointer by Chloe Meng (Elyria, Ohio/First Christian Baptist). This time, however, the Commodores couldn't replicate that late-game magic.
