2024 Commodore Volleyball Season Ends With Loss To Delta College

October 30, 2024 - - The Lorain County Community College women's volleyball team had their season halted by Delta College Tuesday afternoon in the first round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Region 12 DIII Tournament. The Delta Pioneers, who went on to defeat tournament host and No. 1 seed Owens Community College in the championship match, took down the Commodores in four sets (25-19, 25-18, 12-25, and 25-20).

LCCC defeated Delta earlier this season on August 31 in four sets but the Pioneers quickly took advantage of some miscues in the opening game by the Commodores.   With their backs against the wall and trailing two sets, it looked as if they were ready for a comeback in the third with a convincing 25-12 win.  They hit a match best .387, having 14 kills to just 2 errors.

LCCC kept things close with Delta in the fourth despite having 8 errors and hitting a match-low .051.  They led by four then Delta responded and took a four point lead themselves, only for LCCC to respond and even the score again.  Delta went up two points, 19-17, and the Commodores fought back to even capped by blocks from Ava Haddix and Teniya Jenkins.

With both teams knotted up at 19, the momentum shifted to the Pioneers. They connected for a kill that sliced through the Commodore defense and then followed that up with an ace on the next serve. That began a 6-1 run, propelling them to the final against Owens.

Nilaysia Todd and Gabriella Habeck shined offensively for LCCC.  Todd hit .458 in her final match as a Commodore with 10 kills.  She also got it done at the net, picking up a solo block and assisting on two others.  Todd was ranked in the top-ten throughout the season in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference in all blocking categories (solo, assists, total, blocks per set).

Habeck had 18 kills and hit .271.  She also added two blocks (one solo).  The freshman outside hitter has been efficient offensively all season for the Commodores.  She had 10+ kills in 16 matches this season and hasn't had a match below ten kills since August 31 against Mott Community College.  She is ranked second in the OCCAC in kills per set at 3.64 and third in total kills with 284.

Ava Haddix had 36 assists and 12 digs in her final match as a Commodore, her 17th match of 30+.  She ranks first in the OCCAC in assists with 812 total and 10.02 per set.

The Commodores finished the 2024 season with a 12-9 record overall and an 8-4 record in the OCCAC.
